  • The Opportunity

    To lead and manage a team of specialists in the Light Construction and Residential Team within Product Certification, providing certification services to a diverse range of clients from manufacturers to governmental organisations on a global scale working both in the UK and worldwide.


    • The Certification Team Manager will manage a team of specialists delivering UKAS accredited and unaccredited product certification activities on services or products on behalf of BSI worldwide
    • Meeting customer expectations across the whole team whilst achieving the section’s commercial targets
    • Working with UK and global regional offices to deliver customer projects whilst positioning service to compete successfully against global competition for certification services where customers always have a choice of service provider. Almost all clients are external to BSI.
    • Delivers or manages certification projects with an individual value of up to £150,000 and an annual revenue total of typically up to £2.5million
    • Manages own time to achieve an appropriate balance between targets for delivery, sales, business development and management activities
    • Managing the varying demands of internal and external customers
    • The Certification Team Manager is required to plan and ensure strategic and tactical business objectives are met liaising with appropriate departments and senior management team
    • Will operate unsupervised on client and sub-contractor premises (frequently overseas) whilst maintaining management and leadership of the team who themselves are working around the world. Will need to make on the spot judgements regarding activity of self and others (client and/or BSI staff)
    • Will carry out appropriate regional and overseas travel to develop business section

    The majority of the work will be office/home based, but there will be a requirement for the successful individual to be able carry out factory assessments on their own, though there will be training for this, as well as interface with a global base of customers by email, phone and face-to-face both on BSI and clients premises. The position will also require the successful candidate to attend trade shows, trade and technical committees and there will be the requirement for occasional overseas travel both within and outside the EU.

    About You

    • Detailed knowledge of up to 100 International, European or British standards. Expert knowledge of relevant product-related legislation including European directives. Ability to translate client requests into potential new services from any standard in related field of activity.
    • Experience of effectively managing the performance of small teams.
    • Passionate about coaching and developing others.
    • Recognised industry leader in specialist field of activity.
    • Degree or equivalent in a relevant technical subject.
    • Extensive experience in testing and certification activities used in BSI and other laboratories and certification bodies including trade body certification.
    • In depth knowledge of the quality requirements detailed in international good-practice documents (such as ISO 17025 and ISO Guide 65).
    • Experience in developing new business areas from scratch for a worldwide business community.
    • Experience in setting and monitoring budgets and maintaining cost control.
    • Solutions orientated, positive and can-do attitude.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – capable of communicating technical issues to a wide range audience, including clients who are usually technical experts in their own right and with clients who do not use English as a first language.
    • Excellent organisation and planning skills.
    • Familiarity with all office IT systems and their application to commercial and technical processes.
    • Ability to travel within and outside of the UK when required.
