  • The Opportunity

    Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

     

    • To be the “owner” of the methodologies related to subject area evaluation performed by BSI.
      • Resolving technical disputes with clients
      • Devising and authorising interpretation where requirements are ambiguous
      • Reviewing new and amended standards
      • Training and mentoring other BSI staff
      • Research and develop new test methods. 
    • Review and authorise technical reports from colleagues in this area.
    • Represent BSI’s interests in relevant industry technical groups.
    • Support team manager in technical matters.
    • Work in a safe way unsupervised and operate in accordance with the BSI Quality Systems
    • Maintain a complete and traceable record and/or report of all evaluations performed, along with records of instrumentation used and conclusions drawn from these evaluations.
    • Maintain confidentiality of test data and client equipment.
    • Exercise judgement and undertake product evaluations without deviating from the pre-agreed programme or standard test procedures.
    • Communicate progress of testing with clients and discuss test failures and their resolution.

    • Testing process including Report preparation to be completed accurately and to agreed schedules. 
    • Timely response to client queries. 
    • Generates annual income circa £130-£160K. 
    • Positive customer feedback. 
    • Continual personal development in specialist area. 
    • Continual Improvement of the business area in terms of processes, test methods, staff development and other key aspects to support on-going growth and increased efficiency.

     

    Dimensions

     

    • The role delivers UKAS accredited (and unaccredited) product evaluation activities on products on behalf of BSI. Projects delivered by the business are relatively short term, and high quality, “right first time” product evaluation is crucial to the business achieving customer satisfaction and achieving its commercial targets.  The business faces aggressive competition in a stable or slowly growing market that can be subject to major regulatory changes.  Almost all clients are external to BSI. 
    • The job holder’s judgement will form the basis of certification decisions taken by the business.
    • Delivers projects or tasks allocated by Team Manager.
    • Typically delivers around 50 projects per annum.
    • Involved in many projects simultaneously each of which will be subject to time pressures from clients.
    • Use of a number of specialist test facilities and instruments with values of £10k’s.
    • The majority of the work will be performed on BSI premises but working off site may be required for up to two weeks at a time (globally).

    About You

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

     

    • Expert knowledge of International, European or British standards and/or other relevant documents and procedures. Detailed knowledge and experiance in testing to Electrcial Safety standards is essential. 
    • Minimum HNC/HND or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. 
    • Good communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports. 
    • Proactive customer focused approach. 
    • Ability to work as a team and to tight time scales. 
    • IT literate in Word and Excel. 
    • Extensive experience in testing techniques used in BSI or similar laboratories. Including familiarity with quality requirements detailed in relative international good-practice documents (such as ISO 17025). 
    • Ability to solve problems proactively.
