  • The Opportunity

    We now have an exciting opportuinity for a Product Certification IoT Laboratory Manager to head up our new IoT team based out of our Testing Centre of Excellence in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. With over 20.4 billion devices expected to be connected by 2020, the need for organisations to understand the impacts of IoT technology is increasing. From security concerns to interoperability, we have been working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders from product manufacturers to network providers and government agencies to develop assurance schemes that will be relevant today and in the future.

     

    Our IoT Laboratory Services offers penetration testing of devices, applications and systems, to reduce security threats, as well as interoperability testing to ensure systems and applications function and exchange data appropriately and as intended.

    About You

     

    Background:

     

    Ideally with a technology or electronics background, you must have experience of delivering complex solutions in a fast-paced environment, along with the gravitas to provide leadership and direction with the Laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of testing and operational work provided within the IOT business stream. Leading & developing a team of approx. 12 testing experts, you ensure the necessary technical processes, environments and technologies, organisation structure, people skills, governance and reporting mechanisms are implemented and maintained to keep stakeholders up to date with performance. You work in close collaboration with our customers, their partners, and internally across all of the sales, operational & testing functions, to provide testing, verification and BSI Kitemark certification services.

     

    Key Responsibilities:

     

    Leadership: Your primary accountability is to manage the team, including workloads, prioritising projects, coordinating lead-times and communicating with clients and certification teams. You will support the implementation & maintenance of systems and processes required for our sample flow, and maintaining accreditation. Establishing KPI’s around compliance & operational metrics, you will monitor resourcing needs & expertise levels. With responsibility for recruitment, you ensure technical skills, behaviours and team performance is optimised at our CoE facility in Hemel Hempstead. You will actively support and engage with stakeholders to ensure continuous improvements are identified through review and benchmarking processes. Keeps abreast of market trends ensure the scope, resource & training strategy supports our future market development plans.

     

    Project Management: You are to provide management to the wider project team by ensuring high quality technical product delivery becomes the bedrock of our internal & external customer journey. You are able to establish a project control system to ensure objectives are achieved within agreed cost and time parameters. Capable of owning project plans, including some hands on testing and getting buy-in and commitment for the deliverables. Proactively work with our CSIR business stream to share expert knowledge and resources to ensure BSI’s commercial alignment and market offering maximises our mutual business advantage.

     

    Technical Expertise: The role holder is expected to provide guidance, technical input and expert advice to numerous stake holders i.e.(certification managers, sales team, key accounts & lab team) to drive engagement and provide well developed solutions. This will require domestic and over-seas travel to client sites. As a key expert, you are expected to support the development of existing schemes, independently review application contract reviews and advise on risk levels and test durations as necessary. Identify any applications which are either uneconomic or do not reflect the appropriate risk profile and refer these to both the Product Certification IoT Director and Product Certification Operations Director.

     

    Business Development: The Team Manager is expected to work closely with the IoT Business Development Director and Sales Teams to support and engage with new & existing clients. This will include the development of commercial proposals and quotations, including preparation of project plans & meet with key clients.

     

    The role assumes attendance to represent BSI at technical events and seminars, develop “white papers”, participate as an SME in technical discussions and to deliver presentations relating to IoT Security and Interoperability. In support of our growth strategy, the incumbent would be integral to establishing our role as experts & thought leaders within these international industries. With agreement this may include spending up to 20% of your time keeping abreast of market trends, researching future needs, participating in conferences & committees, providing expertise, clarity and influence to develop frameworks & tools for new protocols and threats.

     

    Support the development of in-house Cyber Essentials assessment, which may be delivered from within the team, including resourcing and managing an appropriately skilled team to scope & deliver the work.

     

    Key Dimensions:

    • Reports to Product Certification Operations Director
    • Responsibility to support regional growth and testing.
    • Interaction with clients and senior management across the Group
    • Thought Leadership and Support to operation/sales and marketing delivery teams in PC and CSIR
    • Interaction with Group IT for system development
    • Customer focus – both internal and external
    • Full UK Driving License 
    • SC Security Clearance  

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities / Qualifications:

     

    Has a comprehensive knowledge of testing activities and techniques and is able to manage the testing within complex IT projects with a proven track record in execution and delivery.

    Skilful communicator with excellent ability to build relationships at all levels and communicate well with a wide range of Stakeholders, internal client groups and employees

    Demonstrates the ambition to achieve goals/objectives and the discipline, organisation and perseverance to deliver outstanding customer service. Strong team player with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels

     

    Crest Certified Tester are preferred, with attributes & experience in the following areas advantageous.

    • Good knowledge of accreditation requirements. Experience of leading a product led testing function in a highly complex and changing environment.
    • Ability to think analytically and strategically, recognise & drive change, develop and implement solution
    • Able to build partnerships and gain buy-in from colleagues to support new initiatives
    • Ability to work collaboratively with others across the business in an interdependent role as part of a complex matrix in a global business
    • Able to coach colleagues to develop their skills
    • Results orientated with a track record of achievements
    • Good planning skills and able to form robust working procedures to ensure compliance, data integrity and timeliness
    • Ability to manage a number of projects/teams simultaneously, work on own initiative and deliver to deadlines
    • Proven problem solving abilities, able to act quickly, exercise discretion and resolve issues within prescribed parameters
    • Willingness to travel to interface with all stakeholders
    • Certified at CHECK team member/leader or equivalent (CREST, TIGER or Cyber Scheme)

     

    Desirable Skills:

    • Self-motivated, results orientated individual able to work without supervision
    • Experience with product certification and testing concepts, principles and processes, including internal auditing, accreditation and competence are advantageous.
    • Strong people management skills to deal with the range of day to day employee issues, as well as coaching and facilitating the development of employees.
    • Proven ability to effectively & consistently manage the performance of multi-disclipined teams, managing employees and processes to meet expectations, and manage under-performance to enable all team members to contribute fairly and consistently.
    • Extensive experience in testing techniques used in BSI or similar laboratories, including knowledge of the quality requirements detailed in relative international good-practice documents (such as ISO 17025).
    • Individual should have experience or appetite for promoting continual improvement & a Lean culture.
